Information for Students
Book Ordering Information for Students

The St. Thomas Bookstore has transitioned from a physical store in Murray Herrick Center and Terrence Murphy Hall, to a virtual course material store, managed by Barnes and Noble College Services (BNC). Please note that class materials such as calculators, safety goggles, USB drives, grid paper, etc., can be purchased in the Campus Store and on our Campus Store website. All course materials will be purchased online and delivered to you at your address of choice or to campus where they can be picked up.

What does this mean for students?

The webstore will streamline ordering for students and offers shipping options to your address of choice, or to be picked up from our Campus Store mail room in St. Paul or Minneapolis.

  • You will make an account on the BNC store, using your St. Thomas email address or a personal one if you’d prefer. Your books will be shipped from the BNC supplying center. When you order an e-book or digital option, you will have immediate access.
  • PLEASE order books as early as possible. Standard shipping methods and rates will apply.
Inclusive Access (IA) Materials on Canvas

IA materials on canvas have a free, two-week trial period on Canvas. If you do not want to use and be charged for these materials, you need to opt out on Canvas by the add/drop date. If you do not opt out, you will be charged. There is a button titled “Click Here to Opt Out” on the page hosting your course materials.

If you drop a class before getting a chance to opt out, you will not be charged. If you drop a class after the add/drop date, you will be charged for materials, unless you have already opted out.

If you are having trouble accessing your IA materials, please contact [email protected] or visit our Campus Store in the basement of Murray Herrick on our St. Paul campus with your computer!

Please Note: At the beginning of the semester, all students enrolled in classes with inclusive access materials will see a charge on their account reflecting the cost of this material.

After the add/drop date, the students who have opted out will see the charges removed from their accounts. This removal will happen before the second billing cycle in March.

As sometimes there is a lag in data, you may not see the charge removed before the first bill is due. Do not worry, if you end up paying for digital materials that should have been removed, your account will be credited by the second billing cycle in March.

No Materials on the Webstore

If you have no materials on the webstore, that means your professor has not notified the bookstore of the materials they need for their course. Please check in with them, as they may have another plan for their course materials.

Cengage Unlimited

Cengage Unlimited is a great tool to help reduce textbook costs for students. It is important to understand that Cengage Unlimited does not work for classes that pair their homework and assignments to the textbook directly. As a student who purchases Cengage Unlimited, you log into the Cengage platform and access the textbooks you need via Cengage. You will not be able to access the specific homework assignments that are linked to inclusive access textbooks from the Cengage Unlimited platform.

BNC accepts debit, credit, and PayPal for credit.

Financial Aid for Course Materials

If you would like to apply your financial aid to your purchase, please contact [email protected] for a voucher

If you would like to put your course materials bill on to your student e-bill, please contact the bookstore for a voucher at [email protected]

You may request any amount for books to be put on a voucher. After the voucher is created, it will be sent to your student email with a voucher ID.

Please allow 24 hours for the voucher to show up.

Please add all your materials into the shopping cart and continue through the check-out process as normal. On the last page, you will have the option to use a voucher ID as a form of payment.

Please note that vouchers will NOT cover:

  1. Recommended books
  2. Shipping costs
  3. Rental charges*

*You may use a voucher to cover the cost of renting a book, however, you will be required to provide a credit/debit card along with the order. If you fail to return your rental, or you return the book with significant damage, your credit/debit card will be charged.

If there is a book on the webstore that is listed as recommended and your professor has decided that it is going to be required, please email [email protected]

Rental Charges

If you do not return your rental book, the payment information you provide will be charged for the full price of the book. If you return the book with noticeable and significant damage, there is a chance you will be charged for the full price of purchasing the book. To avoid this, please take care of your books. Store them neatly in your bags and backpacks and take care not to mark them and spill on them.

If you are worried about the condition of your book, please take clear and instructive photos of your rentals as you receive them. If there is a charge to your books afterward, you will be able to compare them to how you received them.

Book Returns/Buy Backs

On the webstore there is a section for book buy backs in the menu, titled “Sell Your Textbooks.”

To find out how much you can get back for a book, please locate the ISBN. On print products, this information can usually be found on the back cover of your book, or on the copyright page inside the book. ISBNs are either written with 10 numbers or 13. If you have both ISBNs, it’s best practice to use the ISBN-13.

Type the ISBN into the box to price your books. Follow the prompts to receive your quote, payment type and delivery options.

To return a book you will need to follow the instructions provided in your order information. Physical books will need to be mailed back.

Digital materials will be refunded if you have not used your access code.

For help with this process, you will need to contact BNC. The St. Thomas Bookstore cannot authorize a refund/return on behalf of BNC; however, we can help you if you get stuck in the process.
